Pain Consultant/Anaesthetist

 We are looking for motivated and experienced Pain Consultants interested in a split post between Pain and Anaesthetics. We are pleased to be working in partnership with Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester who will provide Anaesthetic sessions. The suggested split will be 2 sessions Anaesthetics 8 sessions Pain. There will also be an opportunity to work out of hours on the on call rota at Dorset County Hospital if desired.


The Dorset Community Pain Service is an award winning service which is nationally renowned for its progressive and dynamic pain management practice. Our clinical team present at local, national and international events and contribute to the field of pain at national level. We are currently seeking Pain Consultants with a background in Anaesthetics to join our multidisciplinary team of professionals to lead and deliver the medical aspects of the community pain service.

We are flexible to your employment options and welcome applications from individuals seeking either full time or part time positions. You would work alongside our vibrant team of psychologists, pain nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and be provided with administrative support.

The Dorset Community Pain team have worked with our expert group of service users to develop our multidisciplinary model of care, focusing on helping people to understand and manage their pain through a range of approaches. Our pan- Dorset clinical work is provided from various venues, providing timely and effective care closer to home in accordance with our Trust values. We offer a range of services and support options for our users including an active self-management section via our website, quarterly sessions for supported self-management and our Pain Chain. We continually develop and expand our service, involving our staff and service users in tandem with our staff-service user advisory group.

You should be either already be on, or within six months of eligibility to be included on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council (GMC) and hold a licence to practice.

Dorset County Hospital


The anaesthetic department at Dorset County Hospital is a successful and enthusiastic team. It delivers quality anaesthetic, peri-operative and critical care services to the local West Dorset population and adjoining areas. This includes anaesthetic support for the hospital’s surgical teams including Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Maxillo-facial, ENT (adult and paediatric), Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Urology, Paediatric dental , Colorectal, and General Surgery. Anaesthetic support is also provided in the radiology suite, endoscopy unit and for dental sedation.  It has recently been ACSA accredited by the RcoA.


The department comprises of 18 consultants, 9 specialty doctors and associate specialists and 14 trainees. There is administrative and secretarial support, a large common room and several separate offices in addition to desk spaces provided within the department.There are excellent IT services, wireless networking and there are several computers available in the department connected to both the intra and internet.

Employment in this post requires a Standard/Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.  The DBS levies a charge of £44 and the Trust will recover this cost in instalments from your first 3 salary payments.  This will only apply to candidates who are new to the Trust and not internal staff.
